Logistics, Freight & Maritime

Moving cargo, including the cargo that will not fit in a container.

Overview

Moving cargo, including the cargo that will not fit in a container.

East African freight is a landlocked problem. Cargo arrives at a coastal port and then has to survive the inland transit: a corridor, a border, a customs regime, an exemption process and a road that may not take the axle load. The forwarding is the easy part.

We handle standard sea, air and multimodal movements, and we handle the ones that need engineering: a transformer, a generator set, a plant module, an emergency charter. Project cargo gets a lift plan and a route survey before it gets a booking.

01

Clearance is a document problem

Classification, valuation and duty exemption processing decide the timeline far more often than the vessel does.

02

Compliance before booking

HS coding, rules of origin, sanctions and dual-use screening are settled at quotation stage rather than at the border.

03

Engineer the abnormal load

Heavy lift and break bulk move on a lift plan, a route survey and a rigging method statement, with the cargo insurance structured to match.

Standards

The rules this work is held to.

Technical defensibility means working to frameworks a third party already recognises. These are the ones that govern this practice.

  • INCOTERMS 2020
  • IMDG Code for sea carriage of dangerous goods
  • IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations
  • WCO Harmonized System nomenclature
  • Rules of origin and preferential trade regimes
  • Institute Cargo Clauses for marine cover
  • Bills of lading and charterparty documentation

Adjacent capability

Work in this practice most often runs into these.

Bring us the constraint, not just the request.

A tender that keeps attracting the wrong bidders, a pipeline nobody can see into, a finding that has to be answered. That is where this practice is most useful.
